Put People First Organizing & Legislation for a Healthy Planet

Keith Brunner, climate justice organizer with Rising Tide Vermont & Vermont Workers Center member, and Leslie Matthews, Workers Center leader, discuss the Put People First movement's environmental justice agenda. At a time when our fossil-fuel-dependent economy, and the politicians in its service, are taking us over the climate cliff, there is an urgent need to build a peoples movement from below that can radically transform the system. Local movement organizing in Vermont is focusing on advancing the human right to a healthy environment and livable planet by enacting home weatherization legislation with equitable financing and universal access, and preventing the transfer of climate destabilizing tar sands oil through Vermont, both through legislation and direct action. As Bill McKibben puts it, the laws of physics and chemistry — unlike politicians — do not negotiate.
