WHAT: The Chicken Event – a local business and a neighboring farmer will stand up to regulators and challenge them to deal with regulatory barriers that prevent this business from purchasing locally produced chicken to make flatbread to serve to its customers.
American Flatbread and Hadley Farm will offer flatbreads made with Hadley Farm chicken to customers all day, and then sponsor a speaker and short film about local food in the evening.
Governor Jim Douglas and Agriculture Secretary Steve Kerr have been invited to attend.
WHEN: Friday, June 16, 2006 – 5:30 pm – 9:30 pm. Film screenings: “Sweet Soil at 5:30 pm and 9:00 pm, and “Fed Up” at 6:00 pm. Speaker Doug Flack at 7:30 pm.
WHO: American Flatbread owner George Schenk, Local Farmers Hadley and Connie Gaylord, Rural Vermont board member and farmer Doug Flack (Flack Family Farm, Enosburg), and dozens of local consumers, farmers, and concerned Vermonters.
WHERE: American Flatbread at Lareau Farm, 46 Lareau Road, Waitsfield VT 05673
WHY: Family farmers in Vermont who produce poultry and other meats are faced with burdensome regulatory barriers when attempting to direct market their products.
Consumers want to purchase the meat products, but selling them sometimes is literally a crime. Businesses that want to support local agriculture are faced with the dilemma of whether to break the law in order to provide their customers with food that they want. American Flatbread is standing up to the state to say that this situation is not acceptable, and something must be done.
PHOTO OPPS: Many people will be present. The speakers are dynamic and engaging. If requested, photographers can visit the Hadley Farm as well.
